My Reiki Story: Dina Golan

This is another in our series of “My Reiki Story” posts that we will be adding to the Reiki Evolution blog, where a Reiki person talks about their journey with Reiki. In today’s “My Reiki Story” we hear from Dina Golan from Israel…

I moved to Israel in the 70’s from the States and I’d always been interested in health issues. So when I heard that you can learn how to do Reiki, a form of healing, I jumped at the chance. I’d assumed it was something you were either born with or not, and it still seemed like the whole thing might a con. I’d learned biology in college, and came to the two day class extremely skeptical.

They say there are no coincidences and the very fact that the teacher I chose was someone who had given me a few free sessions a decade before when she had learned Reiki and needed guinea pigs. She later moved to a town an hour away and I’d completely forgotten about her and didn’t even remember her name. When I arrived at her apartment, we began to talk and we both realized that we’d met before.

She gave me the instructions to move my hands together very slowly until I feel the energy between them. I began to roll my eyes, moving my hands together, and even asked her what to do after my hands came together, since I was sure I wouldn’t feel anything. Then my hands stopped moving and I felt it. She looked at me, smiled, and said: I knew you’d feel it.

After my first day learning, I rushed home to try it out on my daughter. She was a teenager at the time and had never been able to sit still for very long. She was willing to have a session but when she heard she’d have to lay down for 40 minutes she began to protest. She eventually gave in and I began doing Reiki on her. Within five minutes she was snoring – which was amazing, since it usually took her forever to fall asleep. This was my first “aha” moment. It spurred me on to do more sessions on other people. I began to do it on my friend, her mother, relatives, anyone who was willing to have a session. I began to see limbs jerk about, felt the intense heat from my hands, people would tell me they felt like my hand was a hot iron, I saw sinuses clear, shoulder pains disappear, backaches subside and more. Each time I thought – just a coincidence, until finally I realized it wasn’t. And I was hooked!

Reiki changed my life in many ways. I never considered myself spiritual, or having any religious beliefs, yet after beginning work with Reiki, I began to see that I am not alone. And not just in a physical way, but in a more global, if not universal way. It’s that feeling of belonging, of being in touch with nature, of something “out there” that we can’t see, touch, or taste, yet it’s there and the “knowing” is deep inside.

In fact, my life has changed in a very dramatic, yet positive way. It’s as if I’ve undergone an internal earthquake, where the earth has shifted. Because somewhere inside of me, something has shifted. It’s as if I were looking at the world one way before the course, and now I look at it in a different way. And I’ve been walking around feeling as if I now have a precious gift that I can share with anyone I choose. I keep offering friends of mine, who suffer from all sorts of health issues, a session of Reiki, and the feedback afterwards is so amazing that it keeps me on the continual path of seeking out other friends who need help.

And living in a country with such turmoil, it was another eye opener to realize that this small country is populated with many healers of various backgrounds, especially in my vicinity. It is wonderful to discover that everyone feels the same – pass this on and make the world a better place. I’ve discovered that people who are drawn to this field are very compassionate and it has been the best thing that could have happened to me.
