I have been a conventional veterinary surgeon since 1976 and have always had an interest in things more natural. I use homeopathy in a small way and it was at the conference of the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons in 2000 that I first heard of Reiki. I bought a simple book, read it and put it to one side. I found it again on 1st January 2002 and knew then that I had to do Reiki. I was attuned to Reiki 1 in February 2002 and then Reiki 2 in May 2002.
Reiki immediately became a part of my day to day work but most people are unaware of it. Many people are not yet ready to accept complementary therapies and prefer the strictly scientific approach; their pets often choose to differ! Other people are more receptive and only too happy for their animals to receive anything that may help, including Reiki.
I often give Reiki to a very nervous animal and after a few minutes can see it starting to relax, often with a slightly puzzled then glazed expression! Some even fall asleep on the consulting room table. Sending Reiki mentally to aggressive animals is also a big help facilitating the examination and treatment.
Reiki is equally good for nervous or distressed owners! Relaxed owners means relaxed pets and vice versa. A pet and its owner are deeply connected and will often reflect each others problems.
Shortly after my Reiki 2 initiation there was a small Jack Russell puppy, only 8 weeks old that had a fractured mandible (lower jaw). It was broken at the vertical ramus near the ear and was impossible to repair other than by gentle support with a soft muzzle. Conventional pain relief was supplied in the form of tablets. I saw the pup two days later. He was still in a great amount of discomfort despite the pain relieving drugs. I did all the usual checks and then as I held his head in my hands I could feel the Reiki energy flow and he became quiet. He relaxed and went to sleep. I said nothing about Reiki to his owner but asked to check him again in a few days time. He was still asleep as he was carried home from the surgery. I was worried when the pup was brought back to see me only two days later but his owner said ‘I have brought him back so you can use your healing hands again’. She said that he had been immediately very much better and they had not used the muzzle for support, he was eating, drinking and sleeping as if nothing had happened but after two days he was becoming uncomfortable again. I admitted he had received Reiki at the previous visit and explained that I was only a channel for the healing energy. It was Reiki that deserved the credit. I gave him more Reiki and when he was checked a week later all was good, he had needed no further tablets for pain relief and made a complete and uneventful recovery.
Ben, an Australian Silky, had different problems. I was asked to see him as I had previously given the client’s other dogs homeopathic treatment. She was concerned for him as he could not or would not rest. He was being overly conscientious guarding the property from anyone and anything that passed by. He was constantly alert and on the go, did not sleep apart from snatched naps and was oblivious to commands to be quiet or come back. He was losing weight but was otherwise very fit and well. I began asking questions leading to a homeopathic prescription and gave him Reiki at the same time. I explained what I was doing and we were pleased to see him stop trembling and be less disturbed by noises penetrating from outside the consulting room, he even sat down for a short time. After 15 minutes he seemed to have had enough. I also gave a homeopathic remedy to be started later that day and asked for a telephone report after two weeks. Three days later I was told that the client wished to speak to me. She said that Ben had slept deeply for four hours as soon as he had arrived home and since then he had been sleeping normally, no more cat-napping. He was responding to commands now even when seeing off passers-by. She asked to bring him for more Reiki as she was sure that it had been the reason for his improvement. I saw him again a week after his first Reiki treatment he had gained weight and was obviously much more relaxed.
Jonesy has now had two Reiki treatments for his very painful neck. He has spondylitis and also narrowed disc spaces visible on x-ray. I was asked to give him Reiki following a friend’s recommendation. Although his owner was sceptical he wanted Jonesy to have Reiki as he had been in trouble for some weeks and was showing little improvement with anti-inflammatories and rest. He could be OK for a short time but then his neck would go into spasm and he would be unable to move at all. When I arrived Jonesy was in a bad way, his neck was in spasm and he was unable to move. During the treatment he started to relax but afterwards still made no attempt to move, he was gently put to bed. I was later told he had then slept for several hours. His owner rang a week later to ask for a second treatment as he was sure there had been an improvement. There were longer intervals between spasms and he was recovering in a much shorter time. He has had a second treatment and I am now waiting to hear how things are.

Reiki has much to offer for animals and can be used together with any other form of therapy or treatment. Before giving Reiki to an animal ensure that it is receiving proper veterinary care. It is also best to ask permission of the animal’s own veterinary surgeon.
