Reiki frequencies

This article is based on some e-mails that Herman and I exchanged in January 2003. Herman has a very interesting 'hypothesis' to explain our connection to Reiki and the different energies that we use. Here are Herman's words...
OK, I'll try to explain what I think. It is just a hypothesis of course, which may be useful until something better is suggested. And it is a long story in writing....
I usually explain to my students that Reiki can be considered as a spectrum of healing energies. This can be compared to light. Most people are aware that the sun emits "white" light. When this sunlight is led through a prism it is "disassembled" to a spectrum of different waves, from ultraviolet to infrared. Each wavelength has specific characteristics: ultraviolet causes the skin to tan, in large quantities it can be harmful to skin and eyes, it may even cause cancer. The other end of the spectrum, infrared, penetrates the skin and the dissipation of the energy in the tissues under the skin causes some warmth which may have therapeutically effects on the muscles. So all these waves have different properties, but we call them all "light". I compare Usui Reiki to a broad spectrum of light (maybe the "white" light as we receive it from the sun). Sometimes new wavelengths appear (channelled healing energies for example). They may fall outside the Usui Reiki spectrum, and, following the light analogy, can then be placed either at the far infrared side or at the far ultraviolet side. This still makes them light, however, they are beyond the spectrum that we usually observe.
The next concept one needs is to understand that all these waves have specific frequencies or vibrations (I prefer to use the term "frequency" as it is a well defined term used in physics. The term "vibration" is, at least here in The Netherlands, often loosely used for anything that changes state or moves, either periodically or at random). In optics technology one usually speaks of wavelength, but wavelength and frequency have a fixed relationship.
The frequency of a wave determines exactly where it is placed in the spectrum. Different colours of light have different frequencies (and wavelengths), and hence they have different properties. This is true for everything that vibrates, so it is true for healing energies as well.
Now we can expand this concept to the familiar radio or TV receiver. These devices function by tuning in to a specific frequency and they then detect the properties of that frequency. In the radio/TV world we call the specific frequencies "broadcasting station" or "channel" and the detected properties "the program", "the show" or any other term you might like to use.
The cable company brings a broad spectrum of radio and TV frequencies into our home. When one would listen to this entire spectrum via a detector all we would hear is noise. What one needs to listen to a specific station or to watch a specific TV station is a tuner. In electronic terms a tuner is a composed of a couple of electronic circuits that resonate at a specific frequency, thus passing that single frequency and blocking all other frequencies.
When we compare this radio / TV concept to Reiki, we can draw a number of parallels:
The Reiki I attunement is comparable to connecting the receiver to the cable (or antenna) signals. The Reiki I student is connected to a broad spectrum of healing energies, but he is not taught yet how to use his circuits to tune in to a specific frequency.
The Reiki II attunements serve to set up resonance circuits for specific frequencies. So the Reiki II student can "tune in" to a specific frequency of the Reiki spectrum and use that specific energy to the maximum effect. Before the level II attunement however he was already connected to those energies, so Reiki II in effect does not add new energies, just a convenient way to connect to what is already there.
A Reiki I student can also access those frequencies if he likes to. I teach Reiki I students how to do distant treatments, without having received the symbols. All they need is the firm intent and probably a proxy (a toy doll) to represent the receiver of the distant treatment.
The Reiki III attunement however connects one to a new frequency that was not present in the Reiki I attunement. So, when we stick to the radio/TV analogy, one might say that with the Reiki I attunement the cable company provides us with radio signals only. Reiki II gives you the capability to listen to individual radio stations in stead of the noise that represents the entire radio spectrum. With the Reiki III attunements the cable company now also provides us with TV signals and we can watch one TV channel.
We all know that there are many more TV stations, but they do not fit the definition of Reiki as I understand things. My understanding is that all Reiki energies are "traceable" to Mikao Usui. So the "DKM TV channel" must be the one that Usui Sensei was connected to, the other "TV channels" are probably not Reiki but other healing frequencies that fit into other healing modalities.
