How to do a Reiki Self-Treatment (Part I)

reiki self treatment meditations

How were you taught to Self-Treat?

Most people who are taught Reiki will have been taught some form of self-treatment, a way of focusing the energy on yourself, for your own benefit, and the most common form of self-treatment is what I would refer to as a “Standard Western hands-on” self-treatment method.

This is where you rest your hands in a series of positions covering the head and torso and maybe beyond, and let the energy flow out of your hands into your body.

It works well, though some of the positions can often be uncomfortable to get to, or hold for any amount of time, and that can often detract from the blissfulness of the experience.

So what I’m going to talk about in a series of articles are how to do Reiki on yourself in a number of different ways, ways to Reiki self-treat that are perhaps different from what you have been taught.

And I’d like to start with what you might call “The simplest self-treatment method ever”!

Taggart’s “Meditation with the intention to heal”

It is possible to self-treat without resting your hands on your body at all, using your intention or visualisation or pure intent. In this example, what you are doing is, basically, setting a definite intent and letting the energy do what it wants to do.

Here are some instructions:

  • Make yourself comfortable in a seated position, maybe with your hands resting in your lap
  • Close your eyes
  • Start to become aware of your connection to the energy, your connection to Reiki
  • Notice how that connection feels, with the energy engulfing you and building within you in just the right way for you in this moment
  • As the energy flows, just remind yourself that your intention now is to heal, to heal on all levels, to rejuvenate, to rebalance
  • Just say to yourself, “this is my time to heal now”
  • And allow the energy to flow, to flow to wherever it needs to go to give you just what you need in this moment
  • Stay in this safe space, allowing the energy to provide balance, and healing
  • And finally bring yourself back when you feel ready, and open your eyes

So this method doesn’t involve hand positions, or symbols, it doesn’t require visualisation, it doesn’t direct the energy in any way. You sit, you merge with the energy and you allow it to flow, to do what it needs to do.

And you can just be there as a bystander in the process, observing, experiencing, in a neutral way: merged with the energy.

Over to you

If this self-treatment method is new to you, why not give it a try?

And post a message below to let us all know how you got on with it, how it felt, what you experienced, what it did for you.

  1. Thank you, Taggart. As a student of Franz Steine, I’m aware that reiki isn’t something that only flows through your hands. For me, a very nice self healing session is to lie in a bathtub full of hot water with magnesium salts, allowing the reiki to flow though the water, and me, and the cats who sometimes join me in the room.

  2. I have been self healing this way for a while now as it just felt right. Thanks for reinforcing my gut feeling!

    1. It’s an easy and unobtrusive way of doing it, isn’t it, as opposed to hands-on contortions that might attract interest/confusion from colleagues!

  3. Having read Taggart’s email and feeling under the weather with a cough/cold I sat down to try this suggested method of self- healing. I started with ‘dry bathing’ and was delighted after a few seconds to feel the sensation of Reiki flowing through my whole being. The chakras in my palms were fizzing at the height of the short session. The energy pulsed, flowed and then gradually faded away when it was done. Magic.
Thanks for suggesting that Taggart. I am just off to repeat the process.

  4. Having had a hectic day of training at work, really needed some reiki. Sitting in a chair letting the reiki flow, feel so grounded, my hands and feet are pulsating. Feel more energized and calm. Simple but so effective!

  5. I have used this method in the past, it was taught to me when I was attuned.. Love it as you can lose yourself wherever you feel the urge to indulge! Thank you for your helpful advice Glenn X love and light to you X

    1. Hi, I’m glad that you are finding the advice helpful. It’s a lovely simple method, isn’t it, and one you can do anywhere. 🙂

  6. It does work and I sometimes feel a bit self indulgent doing it…then I remember, be compassionate to YOURSELF as part of the precepts and my guilt fades away.

  7. Thank you Taggart for sharing your Meditation with the intention to heal. I am not very good at finding time to heal myself, I usually wait intil I am in so much pain, then I remember I have the ability to heal myself. The problem is time, however this healing meditation will be briliant for me and I will use it every day.

  8. Agree with this simplicity. My way is similar. I usually lay prone in the day to give my back a rest. Supine, – Morning before rising, and evening before sleep, invite Reiki to heal all aspects of myself. Though sometimes if I feel the need for spirit, soul, physical or emotional healing I specifically ask for what I need in the moment. Usually fall asleep very quickly, but if I don’t invite Reiki, take ages to fall asleep. Reiki is truly a gift for enhancing my life. Love your way of working by the way. Use your CDs for self and groups.

    1. The way it works for you, Kay, sounds a lovely, simple approach, and great to hear how well it helps your sleeping. 😉
