When you first stepped onto the path of Reiki, you likely experienced an “attunement.” For many, this ritual is presented as the singular, pivotal moment you’re “connected” to Reiki, as if a switch is flipped, or a new energy source is suddenly plugged into you. It’s a powerful experience for many, and it certainly feels like something profound has shifted. The implication often is: once attuned, always attuned, and there’s no need for anything more.
Well, not quite…
This idea of a one-off, all-encompassing “attunement” is a later Western development, a belief that has cluttered a beautifully simple and intuitive system. The truth is, Mikao Usui, the founder of this incredible system, didn’t “attune” anyone. He didn’t use symbols in his connection rituals, and he certainly didn’t teach that you were suddenly plugged into something new. His method was far more elegant, far more liberating. He empowered his students.
This empowerment, known in practice as Reiju, is a simple, profound connection ritual that has come to us from authentic Japanese sources. It’s free from the clutter, the busyness, and the often-rigid dogma that has accumulated around many Western attunement styles. Reiju doesn’t connect you to something you weren’t connected to before. Instead, it acts as a “ritual permission,” a gentle nudge, a “flagging up” of an aspect of you that has always been there, waiting to be fully recognised. It helps you to notice something that has always been there, but perhaps was just out of your conscious awareness.
So, if the power is already within, and the initial connection is made, why would we need ongoing Reiju? This is where the true art of continual empowerment comes into play, aligning perfectly with the core philosophy of Reiki Evolution: that Reiki is all about you and your personal evolution.
Usui Sensei’s students received empowerments from him repeatedly, not because their connection “fizzled out” or needed a “top-up” to prevent it from dwindling. No. They received it again and again, at all levels of their training, because each empowerment reinforced their connection, cleared their channel, and enhanced their spiritual development and intuitive potential. It was a continuous process of refinement, a deepening of their inherent abilities.
This continuous reinforcement is the very essence of the Kaizen of Reiki – that Japanese principle of “continuous, gradual, orderly, and never-ending improvement.” It’s about relentlessly pursuing improvement, one small step at a time, building momentum through consistent effort. Just as your daily self-practice builds cumulative benefits, so too does the regular reception of Reiju. It’s a subtle, yet powerful, way to chip away at your “baggage” , deepen your sensitivity, and become an even clearer, more potent channel for the energy.
You can echo this profound practice in your own journey. While your initial attunement or empowerment provides a permanent connection, receiving ongoing Reiju is a wonderful way to reinforce that connection. Many teachers, including ourselves, offer regular distant Reiju empowerments, allowing you to “tune in” and receive this beneficial spiritual blessing from anywhere. It’s not essential for your Reiki to “work,” but it is profoundly beneficial for your ongoing development.
The beauty of this approach is its simplicit. You are not dependent on a teacher, a specific ritual, or a “top-up” to maintain your connection. The power resides within you, always. But by embracing the power of ongoing Reiju – through consistent self-practice, clear intent, and the conscious reception of these spiritual blessings – you step more fully into your own power, becoming a living embodiment of the limitless blessings Reiki can bring. It’s about allowing your own continual evolution.
