Red Cross Reiki Singapore: “Humour & Humility”

When I arrived in Singapore in October 2011 I began my search for a local Reiki Community of like-minded folk. As Divine synchronicity would have it, my search led me to find voluntary work by connecting me with the Red Cross Reiki Team and, as I had time to give on my hands, I contacted them. The Team were set up a few years ago by Anne Richardson and activities are now run by Bronagh Tucker, both Reiki Masters with a generous Spirit and hearts of gold.

The Team meet deliver Reiki to the mentally and physically handicapped men, women and children of the hospital for a couple of hours a week.  Such encounters are not for the faint-hearted and many volunteers come and go, either through choice or destiny, but there are a core group of about 7 who are able to attend most weeks.

The Red Cross Reiki Team, Singapore 2012

Right to Leftt: Frances, Ying, Wendy, Sham, Anna, Bronagh and Debbie (Elaine sadly absent)

The hospital is multi-cultural and observes a ‘non-religious’ approach in order to maintain polite neutrality (known affectionately by many expats as the Singapore PC!).  As such, there are clear boundaries we must not cross, some are obvious but others, at times, has resulted in a faux pas or 2 on our part (!) as we unwittingly upset the Singapore PC applecart.

Of course, all Reiki Practitioners understand that Reiki is not about religion but, as yet, the general public don’t, on the whole, and we must recognise and honour this (Humour and humility!)

Luckily Bronagh is wonderful and is able to undo any wrongs with the ease and Grace of a true Diplomat 🙂

Enough of the background and on to the main blog

By the time I arrived in Singapore, in October 2011 I thought that, over the last few years, I’d learned all there was to learn about humility and being humbled

Oh how wrong I was!

For those who haven’t yet experienced true humility, or don’t need to as you are already simply ego-less, this is when the ego is well and truly reeled in and silenced! Mine can be a feisty little so and so, but I’ve learned to laugh at it now

My first time at the hospital was memorable indeed.

Now, you would have thought with nearly 30 years of Nursing experience, and more latterly Midwifery, that I would have seen pretty much everything  humanity and the human condition has to offer……….. I certainly thought I had!

But, oh how wrong I was!

The sheer number of beautiful Souls trapped inside mis-formed bodies and ill-communicating minds, simply blew me away. Had I not been working with Anne that day, I think I would have snuck away and shed a million tears in the ladies toilet then made a hasty exit!

The disabilities do, of course, vary from person to person but many of them have severe physical disability and most have communication problems of one sort or another.  On reflection perhaps one might recognise it as actually us, and not them, who have the communication issues as many of those less ‘dis-abled’ seem very able to communicate with each other with great ease and, I suspect, at times that the joke may even be upon us 😉 (Humour)

Humanity: so good at jumping to conclusions, so good at judging still!

Maybe it is us who are trapped within our own perceptions and mis-perceptions of who and what we are and just what ‘life, the Universe and everything’ is really all about! (Humility)

I had no idea how to start working with these beautiful Souls, but as Reiki does the doing, really that’s all you need to do, simply channel, with no pre-conceived outcome, and allow the non-religious ‘Source’ (whoever or whatever that is) to do the rest

For, without getting religious or too philosophical, we do not know what Soul contract they may have has that brought them to this life the way they are.

I began to learn that many of these lovely Souls can indicate whether they want healing and where they want it, which is clearly a bonus! Not many of them can walk but there are a few who can drive their own wheelchairs better than most Singapore taxi drivers can drive their cars (!) and some even come and ‘join in’ when you are giving Reiki to another person. They are naturally intuitive in the same way that children and animals are when it comes to energies because they don’t have the left brain butting in and demanding ‘proof’ or explanation like the rest of us do!

At other times it’s useful to scan first in order to pick up areas that are ‘shouting’ for Reiki so working with the Byosen is a more useful way of working, particularly with limited time for treatments.

(If anyone would like a recent article on working with the Byosen, please contact me by email which is below the blog)

It’s a delight to see Reiki being well received as some respond by becoming calmer and begin to drift off into that blissful space that most of us know well, the ‘Reiki zone’. It affords you the time to ‘just be’ with them, on a different plane. For those who are more sensitive, this is a space where you can meet aspects of them that exist outside of the 3D we know and are familiar with. A space where their true Soul exists without dis-ease, without dis-ability.

YES, another very humbling and beautiful experience, one that teaches you that, actually, all really is well and we are all merely playing out the game of choice (Ascension) in our way and at our own pace.

What strikes me even more, whilst in this space, is the ever increasing feeling of Unity Consciousness. That ‘oneness’ and how it opens your heart and allows you to give, to be generous of Self, to share. For this is our true nature, not one of fear and recoil, withdrawal from Self and others as we try to hang on for dear life to what we have and what we are. When all we really need to do is to ‘let go and let God’

These beautiful Souls continue to teach me that, no matter what the circumstances of our lives, Love and Joy can shine through in a simple smile and Light up the world! (Humour)

Despite their disabilities (should we even call them that?) Perhaps I will say ‘differences’ and possibly true to say ‘limitations’,  it’s such a joy to get a smile out of them. When they smile, it’s genuine, no hiding behind a painted smile for them, oh no, unlike the rest of us sometimes! (Humility and a generous lashing of humour)

We are, of course, unsure of the overall long-term effects, but those who have been visiting the hospital for a while say that they have noticed marked differences in some of the people there.

What we do know is that their joy is infectious and yes, another humbling moment as you consider their lot compared to yours and the sheer number of times we whinge about the most minor inconveniences in our lives!

I realise now that they are teaching me, so the least I can do is offer what I can in return:

Reiki and a smile 🙂

Singapore, February 2012

I honour deeply the work that the team are doing and the wonderful individuals who make up that team. It is my great pleasure to share with you some of their own words and experiences to end this blog

The Red Cross Home for the Disabled relies on volunteers to support the work they do. Passing on small gifts with Reiki is truly a special experience. My time with the residents giving and sharing from the heart is something very meaningful. I am very fortunate to be able to volunteer at the Red Cross Home, it has definitely enriched my life.

Bronagh

Whether it’s providing a full-body treatment or simply holding a hand and singing some songs, each visit to the Red Cross Home for the Disabled is different.

What I love about Reiki is that it transcends any physical or mental disabilities that the residents may have, and any preconceptions or beliefs I may hold. To be able to connect with the residents – energy to energy, spirit to spirit – is both a rewarding and humbling experience.

 Anna

The most touching experience I’ve had was seeing the resident I was assigned to give Reiki to playing a sort of peek-a-boo game to cheer up and calm down another resident who was highly distraught . I’m in awe of the huge compassion these residents show to others and am truly humbled when I reflect on myself. I look forward to my weekly visits to the Red Cross because every visit is an opportunity to learn from these beautiful residents lessons on gratitude, humility and compassion.

Sham

Volunteering for Red Cross Disabled Home has been the most humbling experience in my life, and while I give the residents reiki, they have given me so much more! They have so little, yet so little makes them happy. They teach me how to truly experience happiness, and appreciate and be thankful what I have in my life.

I feel the residents are especially sensitive to reiki, almost like children in their innocence. As such, they definitely reap the lovely benefits very quickly 🙂

As a South African living in Singapore, I was truly honoured to have been led to give Reiki to the mentally and physically disabled at the Red Cross Home and also honoured to work with my wonderful Reiki colleagues, who hail from many different countries around the world, uniting in administering universal life force energy to the men, women and children of the home. However, the most rewarding part of this work is when a resident’s condition improves and they recognise your voice, straining to see you from their beds or you receive a hearty wave in recognition. These people are very special beings.

Reiki people come from all backgrounds

I think perhaps that when the ‘person on the street’ thinks about a Reiki practitioner or teacher, they will have an image come to mind of some New Age person, maybe in a kaftan, with incense, crystals, chanting something, and while this may be a valid description of some Reiki people (and I don’t have a problem with that, by the way), Reiki is actually something that is learned and practised by people from a whole load of different backgrounds. A while ago I asked people to let me have their occupations, so I could prepare a list, and I have included that below. Equine Reiki in pictures

I would like to share with you all some pictures of the lovely Pancho receiving Reiki from one of my students Brenda

At the start of the treatment, Brenda connects to Pancho with one hand on the wither and the other on the chest connecting through the heart.

Brenda moves on to let Reiki flow through the back and loins, as she does this Pancho closes his eyes and lowers his neck slightly

Pancho shows he is enjoying the treatment; chewing and licking his lips

As Brenda moves on to send Reiki to the hind quarters, Pancho responds by lowering his head further, keeping his eyes closed as he softly goes to sleep.

__________________________________________________________________

Below is a poem that Pancho inspired me to write after one of our Equine Reiki sessions…

To be seen

As I meet your gaze and you look into my eyes,
You look deep into my soul,
The feeling of another being seeing my inner self,
Connecting through as one.
No outer appearances are perceived,
Just purely loved,
To feel so special from ‘just’ a look,
You know who I am,
What I am,
Why I am.
You see the purpose and perfectness of the human soul,
You bring those qualities to the surface, just though being.
To be seen by you, is to truly see myself.

My Reiki Story – Paula Ghazai

Paula GhazaiThis is another in our series of “My Reiki Story” posts that we will be adding to the Reiki Evolution blog, where a Reiki person talks about their journey with Reiki. In today’s “My Reiki Story” we hear from Paula Ghazai from Kent…

I came to Reiki via massage and other therapies. I worked for ten years within the Beauty and Cosmetic Industry and when I left I wished to continue with the hands-on part of that. I continued to offer massage treatments, training in Aromatherapy and Indian head Massage but would find myself getting really tired after massaging someone if they were not well and in particular if a client had emotional issues such as anxiety or depression I would sometimes even be physically sick.

A friend mentioned Reiki quite a few times but I feel that I am quite an earth bound individual and thought that Reiki was a bit too spiritual and “airy fairy” for me! However Reiki just kept popping up everywhere..online, books, magazines.. so I gave in and researched my subject a little more and on discovering Reiki Evolution and Taggart’s “simply it is” and straightforward approach I decided to do Reiki 1 (April 2007) with Laetitia, as she too had a Beauty Therapy and Massage background. My last attunement was a revelation. I had gone with a totally open mind and no expectation. I felt like I was plugged in to a sort of super grid.. Reiki 2 followed in July 2007.

During this time my father became ill with the first telltale sign of vascular dementia. My Reiki meditations were sustenance throughout.. that gentle yet powerful hum. He just got worse and in 2009 had a devastating stroke which means he is now in full time care. I really kept the Reiki to myself during this time, just offering here and there to family and friends and also did not really have much spare time to pursue any other therapies.
Spring this year I knew the time was right to get going with it all again and I attended a catch up with Louise, it was just the same and oh so new all at the same time. I now offer Reiki, EFT, Hopi Ear Candling and Therapeutic and Indian head Massage. I see Reiki as something that stands alone but also underpins all my other treatment offers and in fact pretty much everything I do and am.. I even stir it into cakes!!

I am in the process of setting up my room and now have a website and will soon be offering a venue for Reiki Shares in West Kent Area www.palmtosoulholistics.com

I am sure I will at some point go back to one of the RE teachers for the Masters training and I am sure I will know when. My personal Reiki mission statement would have to be “Don’t expect just accept”

My Reiki Story: Carol Leslie

Carol LeslieThis is another in our series of “My Reiki Story” posts that we will be adding to the Reiki Evolution blog, where a Reiki person talks about their journey with Reiki. In today’s “My Reiki Story” we hear from Carol Leslie from Aberdeen…

My Reiki ‘journey’ began in the year 2000 when my brother Ronnie was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer. He was barely 45 years old and I was devastated. I didn’t know what to do initially, but I simply could not stand by and watch my brother deteriorate before my eyes without helping him in some way. I began my search for help and meaning and had actually heard something about Reiki healing from a good friend at the time. Back then hardly anyone taught Reiki in our area but there was a teacher in Aberdeen who I could go to. My friend agreed to accompany me to the one day class for the First Degree. At this point I hadn’t even experienced a session of the hands on healing, which would change my life. The day of the lesson eventually came and when I did receive the first laying on of hands, after our attunements were received, I was so moved to tears and my body shook quite considerably. I had no idea that I would be this affected. I had come to receive Reiki in order to help my brother, but had been told by my most compassionate teacher that I would heal first! This was amazing to me to learn at the time.

It was not long before I was ‘champing at the bit’ after using the energies for myself and some friends (and Ronnie) and wanted to move on with my tuition. Surely the Second Degree would help me, my family and ultimately my brother, even more? Ronnie had in fact been through major surgery by the time I had moved from one degree into the next, and was in a form of ‘remission’. We were all but holding our breaths at this stage. It seemed so hopeful that Ronnie might even beat the horrible illness he had manifested in his life. I was so keen with my studies and soon I had case histories to complete and I was becoming quite well known in my community for being a Reiki practitioner. I had many who wanted to experience the therapy and so many bookings. I qualified before long as a professional therapist and what some had considered a radical and new lifestyle for me to adopt (and some even considered quite whimsical at the time!), I began to prove myself ‘worthy’ when many of my new clients returned to me often for more treatment. By now I had notched up a few ‘success stories’ and many talked about my relaxing and alternative approach to healing. There was no doubt that my brother enjoyed his therapies as well, because I visited him on a regular basis offering him solace and he began to ask for more when he was going through his chemotherapy treatments. I kept a case history of all of Ronnie’s treatments as I progressed with my tuition. I moved on to ‘mastership’ and I had to travel to Manchester to receive my attunement from another, wonderful and compassionate, international Reiki master. I must of course mention that my first two master/teachers were teaching (and continue to teach) the Western way of Reiki. By this time my brother Ronnie was beginning to show signs of becoming ‘worse’ with regards to the cancer he had developed and he was told that it had grown in his liver and was not getting any better. I continued to offer him Reiki and Ronnie became quite spiritual towards the end of his life. He definitely got a lot out of the treatments in a mental/emotional and spiritual sense, even though he didn’t seem to get better physically at this point. I supported all of my family with Reiki throughout Ronnie’s illness and when he finally passed from this world we were prepared for what lay ahead. I will always believe that Ronnie received what he was meant to through Reiki and that his life was cut short for a reason. (Something which is yet to be revealed) Ronnie was given only weeks to live from his consultant at the hospital, but he lived for a further two years. He was a very theatrical and talented man, who took to the stage in Aberdeen. He was still able to perform, even close to the end of his life, and went on some amazing holidays with friends and family. Something that I do not think may have happened without the help of Reiki!

I wrote a book in tribute to him soon after his passing, called ‘Divine Timing’. I promoted it for a time, but now simply allow the book to ‘sell’ itself. Many have healed from reading it and I have managed to send it to a few choice celebrities around the world.

My story would not be complete without mentioning my most recent master/teacher and mentor for a time of course. When my brother Ronnie passed away I felt lost and it was like a gap was left in my world. I had begun to feel this way about Reiki for some time before his tragic death in fact, but could not put my finger on why this was. I realised what it was when I ‘discovered’ Taggart King during one of my searches online. Reiki Evolution shouted out from the pages of my computer one fateful day. I instantly knew that I needed to refresh all of my degrees in Reiki. Since Taggart took me on board as one of his students I have never looked back. I filled in the gaps of what I felt was missing from my Reiki education. My meditation is more fulfilling on a daily basis for one thing. I have created many students since being able to pass on ‘Usui Do’…..and continue to do so. In my opinion, Reiki is like a stepping stone towards our ultimate ‘waking up’ to What Is. I recommend it to everyone, no matter what the condition they present. Reiki brings everything back to balance and harmony by reminding us of who and what we really are….our essential selves are restored.

Carol Leslie

Reiki & the Guilt Trip

Why is it that so many Reiki Practitioners feel guilty about treating themselves?

Why do they think they have to spend all their free time and more ‘healing’ others?

This is a question I often ponder

Fundamentally I think that the majority of people who take Reiki training carry the healer archetype and, by nature, they have a deep desire to help and support others above all else.

Sometimes to the cost of their own health & wellbeing!

So here is some information that you already know but I’m going to say it again (and again) because it’s REALLY important, particularly now with all the current Earth Changes going on within and around us.

Let’s get something quite clear here. You absolutely and categorically should work with Reiki regularly and, more importantly on yourself, in order be a good and clear channel for healing.

Consider our connection to the Reiki Source as a pipe. When we are born it is clear and unclogged by human nonsense and debris. Ever wondered why so many children are more open to inter-dimensional experiences?

As we grow, so starts the slow rot as our pipe begins to fill with the emotional and mental debris of human 3D existence.

When you receive a Reiki Reiju Empowerment or Attunement, your pipe is cleared and your connection re-established.

If only that were the end of it!

BUT……….then you go back to your 3D life and the pipe begins to clog again (unless you are truly enlightened by then of course!)

Regular channelling of Reiki and receiving of Reiju unclogs your pipe over and over, maintaining a clear channel and connection to Reiki and Source itself.

So, if you do not clean out your own Reiki ‘pipe’ regularly then it will remain clogged and you will continue to feel that human condition of dis-ease that is a result of separation from Source and ‘all that is’.

We must remember that we are all connected energetically. There is no space between you and I. So it stands to reason that if I work on healing myself, then the resulting good vibrations will emanate out and be experienced by the whole.

SIMPLES!

Taking this a little deeper now……

Author, Medical Inuitive and Spiritual Teacher Caroline Myss insists that humanity need daily connection to the Sacred in order to regain and maintain equilibrium and wellbeing

I absolutely agree with her on this. We have lost our way over the years and have lost our innate connection to the sacred.

Indigenous people instinctively knew that ‘God’ exists in everything and they lived and worked with this in mind, each and every day. They honoured nature and the nature spirits and they worked with the natural cosmic cycles. They connected daily to their Gods.

The Japanese people and the Reiki founder, Usui Sensei, lived this way. Shinto was practised prior to Buddhism in those days and Shinto recognised and honoured ‘Kami’ the divine nature in all things.

As such, when they felt Kami or a great energy in, for example, a tree, they built a shrine there in honour of Kami and placed shimenawa or holy rope around it. I was so pleased to have learned this as it made sense of what I’d felt last summer when I had my unexpected experience with a tree in the McRitchie reservoir in Singpore (see previous blog)

When I read about Shinto, I understood what we have lost over the years.

We are now returning to Source, Divine Union and to living with honour for the Divine in all Creation.

Daily connection to the sacred is, indeed, our Manna from Heaven

So feel free to indulge and ENJOY!

Namaste
