Using elements of HatsuRei Ho

reiki teaching advice: explain, guide, review

HatsuRei Ho is a daily meditative practice that involves moving energy. It is generally undertaken by people who have attended a Reiki course. I have taught elements of HatsuRei to clients who haven’t even contemplated learning Reiki yet, to help them manage their energy. The feedback has invariably been positive.

Take Kenyoku which means dry bathing for example. What you do is take your right hand to your left shoulder as you breathe in, and brush across the body to the right hip as you breathe out. Do the same thing with the left hand from your right shoulder brushing to the left hip. You then brush down your arms to your fingertips, breathing in as you start and out as your brush down. Both sides. You can repeat this three or more times.

Why would you want to do this and why have my clients found it so useful?

Several years ago, a client who was very successful in his business reported that he felt drained after his morning briefings. He arrived at the office happy enough, but felt tired within the first hour. He was absorbing everything said and unsaid that was going on in the meeting room. I taught him the dry brushing technique. It made sense to him, and back in his office, he was prepared  to give it a try.

As you brush across the body and down the arms, imagine that you are letting go of anything that might have stuck without even trying to work out what that might be.

He enjoyed the easy practice and was pleased with the results. There were still challenging meetings, but there was no need for him to carry the atmosphere around with him for the rest of the day.

When we do Kenyoku, we move chi or ki along our meridians, encouraging a smoother flow. As a physical exercise it is also soothing and balancing. It is related to both Qi Gong and Taoist massage.

Think of it as dusting yourself down or straightening yourself up.  James Bond does it after a dangerous encounter, to signify completion and moving on.  In energy healing terms, it is a practical way of getting back in touch, quite literally, with greater positivity and wellbeing. It benefits you, and all around you.

Whether you have already learnt Reiki, or are contemplating it, do Kenyoku when you come home from work, after you have been queuing up in the supermarket or had a difficult conversation and notice how this simple exercise can cleanse your energy field as surely as a shower cleanses your skin.

What happened when I gave a Reiki treatment…..

reiki lessons in hertfordshire

Jon came in some time ago for a Reiki treatment.  He had a very severe “chest infection” and was wheezing.   He was VERY poorly and I was concerned that he may have pneumonia. He settled down on my couch (I had to prop him up because his chest was so bad) and I put some soothing music on and said my Reiki prayer before starting his Reiki treatment.

I put my hands on his shoulders and connected with the energies….. After a few minutes I took myself out of the equation and merged with the energies.    Soon I became aware of something very strange happening.  I felt that my hands were sinking into Jon’s ribcage…  I opened my eyes momentarily and saw my hands still resting on his shoulders…. I closed them again and trusted in the process.   I was also aware that my hands seemed to be “pulling” out negative energies.

When the treatment drew to a close, and Jon came to, his first words were:

“Wow!  That was weird…… I felt your hands sinking into my chest and clearing out my lungs”.  I told him that I had felt a similar experience………And we both noticed that he was not wheezing anymore.

Jon telephoned me a few days later to thank me for the treatment and said that he did not need to see his doctor as he was planning to, as he felt completely better.

The intensity of Reiki never ceases to amaze me…..   Have you had an experience with Reiki that you would like to share?  I would love to hear them!

Just For Today, I Am Free From Worry…

reiki precepts principles gokai

Some years ago, I attended a Reiki gathering at West Wittering, Sussex………… There I met many other Reiki practitioners and am still in touch with Diane  Thompson from Reiki Evolution all these years later……

One of the guest speakers was a Reiki Master from the Caribbean………… tall, slim, very energetic and with a smile that lit up the room……….

He spoke for an hour on one precept:  “Just for today I am free from worry”…..

“What is worry”?   He asked us to define this…… several hands were extended nervously as three or four people tried to do this………..he thanked them all graciously and then added his own considered definition:

“Worry”, he said, “is an unnecessary expenditure of energy over a situation we have no control over”…………… He repeated this slowly………..

“Take an example” he said…………. “If you have carefully done a pile of washing, put it all on the line outside to dry, and then you have gone off to work.   What happens if it starts to rain while you are 30 miles away?  Do you sit at your desk and worry about it?  Is there any point?  Does anything change?   So you see my friends, worrying about it does not bring your washing in!  However, if you have a kindly neighbour who you can telephone, you might be able to redeem the situation……”

This is what happens in our lives – a problem arises and usually, we worry about it and get nowhere.   Instead, if we can send Reiki to a family member in hospital instead of worrying about it,  that would be more productive, and beneficial.

So, stop and think whether you can do something about a situation (sending Reiki, for example) before expending your energy unnecessarily……….

Each time I read the Five Precepts, I am humbled by their profound simplicity and relevance in our lives today……..

How can anyone have worries when there is delicious ice cream to be had at Buckingham Palace!

HSZSN but not as you’ve seen it before!

hszsn expanded into component partsHSZSN is the acronym used to refer to the ‘distant healing symbol’, familiar in its various guises to anyone who has attended a Second Degree Reiki course.

It’s the trickiest of the symbols to get to grips with and usually has 20+ strokes or hand movements to draw it out.

HSZSN actually consists of five separate Japanese kanji which have all been overlapped and merged to produce one ‘composite’ kanji, which we see on courses.

In this blog I have posted an image of what these five separate kanji look like. The calligraphy was kindly brushed for me by the fantastically talented Japanese Calligraphy Shihan Eri Takase, who does all our Japanese writing for us, on our Reiki certificate templates, Reiki precepts prints, Reiki CDs and Reiki manuals.

Chinese whispers

When people attended Reiki courses in the past, many students and Masters weren’t provided with hard copies of the Reiki symbols and so had to reproduce them from memory. That perhaps wasn’t so bad for the simpler symbols like CKR and SHK, but for HSZSN this led to a process of “Chinese whispers”, where the drawings altered slightly each time they were taught.

So now, quite understandably, there are various versions of the symbols in existence, some closer to and some really quite different from the original Japanese source.

Eri’s calligraphy takes us back to the originals, though. It’s great to see the original individual characters that the symbol was based on.

Merging the separate symbols

If you look at the image, you can see that the bottom part of the first kanji looks rather like the top part of the second kanji, so you could move the upper kanji downwards so that the ‘cross’ overlaps, producing one composite figure.

Similarly the bottom section of the second kanji looks rather like the top section of the third kanji, so they could be merged and overlapped. And so on down the line.

And that’s how the composite HSZSN was formed!

Over to you

Have a look at the distant healing symbol that you were given.

See if you can work out what has changed, and what has stayed the same, compared to the original characters.

Post a message below to let me know what you discovered.

What do you think of the ‘expanded’ HSZSN?

Intention in Reiki work

do reiki attunements work

It never fails to inspire me how this word *intention* can be so subtle, yet so powerful.

Apparently, in the non-physical realms, (for use of a better word), as we think , we are there, as we intend, it happens etc. etc………………

I have worked with the Universal energies for many years and I can still be absolutely amazed at how powerful our intentions can be.

It is us who make it complicated and complex.

At times sometimes we can feel very much on our own,  especially if you are like myself, and don’t experience any whistles and bells  with angels floating around the room!

Initially it is wonderful to get proof when we first start to work with Reiki, but like most things, it balances out and starts to calm down. The *honeymoon phase* may be over for a while, but rest assured, it will return when you are least expecting it.

This is what I love about channelling this energy, it surprises us time and time again.

We don’t always get what we want though. It can manifest in many different guises, and that is why it is very helpful to be open, to be alert and to surrender to what the energy is presenting to us.

Live the 5 Reiki Precepts. Be mindful. It is all happening NOW1

Be childlike and trusting and put no conditions on anything!

When something does manifest, for heavens sake *trust* what you are being shown or given. Your intuition is never wrong. It is the language of the Soul basically!

Sometimes we think it is wishful thinking, we are imagining things, or it’s my mind playing tricks.

Our Western chattering minds can tell us all sorts of untruths about ourselves, that we are not developed enough, that we cannot sense anything, and that everyone else is getting something except little old me!!!

Getting our heads out of the way for a start is a good thing, asking Reik to assist us to be more open and trusting helps.

You know, we are Light Beings having a human experience while in body. So why, as a Spiritual Being can’t you believe in yourselves? You come from Light and you will go back to Light.

{You have just forgotten this temporarily}

You are part of the whole Universal Cosmos. And it is awesome, is it not? You are Reiki, (and Reiki is just a word which came up later in Usui’s time on earth)  but now you know this *consciously* due to the courses we offer at Reiki-Evolution.

O.K. I have went off track and twittered on a bit,  and I want to keep my message simple and uncomplicated.

Reiki is meant to enjoyed, not endured!

My students are very precious lovely Souls, who yearn for deeper and further knowledge, and I always talk a lot about Intention at the courses I host.

What I put out, comes back to me. I am very much aware of these Universal Laws, therefore it is important to keep our thinking as kind and loving as we can. Example if we put out aggression, if we are judgemental of others etc, then that’s what we’ll come up against.

Intolerant and unkind people! Usually with unbalanced egos!

But yes, they are learning too and have a right to be here

We are all playing out a drama prior to an agreement we made at some point!.

For some it is challenging and painful, while others seem to skate through life. Who said life would be fair anyway? We create our experiences, consciously or unconsciously.

A number of years ago, I had a student who completed all of her Reiki training with myself. This lady was paralysed from the waist down, due to a major road accident years before.

She gets around very capably in her *jet set buggy* and has the most beautiful and positive attitude to life. Nothing is a problem she can’t overcome. She has walked the road of the *suffering* so to speak, and life’s challenges will not hold her back from what she has to do.

She runs Reiki courses on a regular basis.

Now, remembering that this lady cannot stand, has no physical power from the waist down, manages to transmit the most powerful Western Reiki attunements at her Master classes, purely by *Intention*

She also transmits the Reiju Empowerments very beautifully, while sitting in her chair, all by *Intention* (And Usui Sensei did this also!) Without any rituals. All pure Intention!!!

I have received from her and have experienced her transmissions, and have been witness to the uplifting and wonderful energies when she is working.

This is *Intention* at work. She believes, *no she knows who she is* . A Lightworker!, following her inner guidance.

And can I say that this Soul could teach us all about *humility*

She works quietly and powerfully.

Another example I would like to share with you is about a student of mine who came along to do her Reiki Two with me a few months ago.

In the afternoon when we were going through the level 2 techniques etc, I was explaining to  her the *many hands* method.

She brought in her ethereal hands and was being gently guided by the energies. She then asked me if it was O.K. to direct some of these energy hands to *her own back* which was painful and uncomfortable. I noticed that she had been stooping a bit.

“Well, why not, I said, “we are all working as one, we are one, we are connected together as one energy, yes bring some of these hands around to your own back, and intend that the Reiki energy flows into your own back.

(I was very tempted to put my own hands on her back, but wanted to see what would happen)

Lo and behold, after a few moments she started to feel a warmth coming in, like a soft soothing balm being applied to the affected area, just being in the moment and experiencing this was a very powerful revelation for her and the other students.

Yes, we are all one!

This is the power of *Intention*

No doubting, just trusting and being open to what is. It. may not always be what we would expect, but Reiki only works for the greater good of all concerned.

I wish each of you a magical and transforming Reiki journey.

May your path be strewn with opportunity and growth, and of course much joy!

Like the Angels, lets take ourselves *lightly*

How creative is your Reiki?

reiki sensations feelings in hands

Reiki is a magical energy that has limitless uses…… how creative are you with using this in your everyday life?

I use it every day!!   Some examples:

I reiki my food and water – in fact everything that I consume.

I energise my treatment room and couch each day, and sometimes reiki the whole room using the symbols on each wall, ceiling and all the corners of the room.

I reiki my car when it is parked – I reiki my home – especially when I am away.

I use reiki on all my plants, and I specially reiki the seeds that I sow….

I send reiki on ahead to a “reiki bank” for any particular stressful event and while I am there, I draw on that.   This is a very useful tool.

I have found it useful to draw the Cho Ku Rei symbol in the soles of my shoes and I have found great relief when I have a backache as I step into my shoes.

Reiki your bath water and feel the relaxing energies flow over you………

Try using Reiki on flowers you have cut for your room and prepare to be amazed at how long they last…………….

Reiki your pets and watch them calm down and relax

As Taggart mentions in his manual, you can experiment by Reiki-ing your wine and tasting the difference!

Have you heard of the work done by a Japanese scientist Dr  Masaru Emoto?  He has photographed water from various sources in crystal form and has proven that water molecules change depending on what it has been exposed to.   Just expressing appreciation “thank you” when given a glass of water, immediately changes the “snowflake” crystal to something quite magical.  Have a look at this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAvzsjcBtx8

See also:  http://www.wellnessgoods.com/messages.asp

So just think what amazing things can happen when you reiki your food  and environment each day and show appreciation for everything – the simplest Thank You changes the molecular structure of water and food!

Would love to hear how you use your Reiki creatively!!

Being Compassionate to Yourself…

reiki for stress relief

Whilst teaching Reiki First Degree, one of the subjects I love discussing is Mikao Usui’s Precepts.  For all intents and purposes there are five fairly simple rules that we Reiki folk attempt to live by but I have to confess, in the western world, it isn’t always easy to rise above our frustrations and remain calm or unconcerned about the challenging situations we may find ourselves in.  One precept that I find always leads to an interesting conversation is:

Just for today…

Be compassionate towards yourself and others.

Sounds such a simple precept doesn’t it?  Or does it?  The general consensus of opinion is that we seem to find it easy to show compassion towards others but not to ourselves! Why is that? Why do we find it so difficult?  Healers are compassionate people by nature; isn’t that what draws us to Reiki along with the desire to help others?  Yet even the most compassionate amongst us can still find it difficult to show the same kindness to themselves as they would to others.   Why is it when we are emotionally wounded, or when we’ve made a mistake (we are human after all!), we find it so difficult to give ourselves a pep talk or words of reassurance?  Would we treat our friends and loved ones with such negativity? Is it really far easier to punish ourselves than to treat ourselves with kindness and understanding?  Sadly, many people I speak with seem to agree that it is.

In Reiki we begin to learn and understand the power of intent. We know we can send healing energies across the globe, into infinity and beyond if we so wish.  Reiki will penetrate even the strongest of walls.  We are beginning to discover through quantum physics that thought is an incredibly powerful process which can produce astonishing results on the body and as such if we choose to continue to be negative towards ourselves on a frequent basis, then what effect are we having on our health?

To give you an example, the Japanese scientist Dr Emoto Masaru has conducted many experiments with water.  He subjected some samples of water from various sources to loving words and thoughts.  Other sample were subjected to negative thoughts and words of  hostility.  The water  from each of the samples was then frozen and the crystals they formed were photographed.  Amazingly, the water that was treated with love and kindness formed spectacularly beautiful ice crystals and the water that was treated with cruelty produced deformed and irregular crystals.   So here’s the thing and I’ll leave you with this thought:

Water constitutes approximately three quarters of the human body.  If water is so dramatically affected by positive and negative thoughts, just what exactly are we doing to the health of our bodies, minds and subsequently our souls if we struggle to treat ourselves with compassion?

So….. just for today:  be compassionate towards yourself and others.

Much love to you all,

Ann x

Experiencing Reiki: Is this really happening – or is it me?

I love to share the enthusiasm generated by students when they talk about working with Reiki, either on or after a course.  What I’ve noticed in particular is the amazement of many who can’t quite believe the powerful sensations they are feeling.

Students who attend Reiki First Degree courses are always excited and surprised by the sensations they feel in their hands when scanning and treating others in the group.  This excitement is palpable, evoking comments such as, ‘I could feel tingling in my hands’ or ‘I was aware of intense heat’.  Then, as though unable to believe this, a little frown appears, followed by a softly spoken, ‘Am I imagining this?’

After empowerments, some students describe the wonderful experience of receiving Reiki as light, colour or other sensations, very often again adding, ‘I wondered if it was me, imagining it!’  This is understandable as we are not used to feeling such sensations in every day life, for example, whilst taking the dog for a walk or doing the weekly shopping (unless we tune into Reiki at the same time of course!).

Reiki 2 students are very often taken aback by the power of the energies they are introduced to at this level.  Yet, quite a number have expressed the thought that it might be their imagination at work when, during or after the course, the energy feels very much more intense. They may also question whether the greater sense of calm that they are noticing is because of Reiki, or all in the mind!

You may feel one or many physical sensations or experience a different emotional state whilst practising, receiving empowerments or carrying out Reiki meditations.  These will be so powerful that, as you continue to practise regularly, you will be convinced more and more that you are not imagining things.

So, please don’t worry if you have doubts.  I do remember questioning the source of the sensations I was experiencing at the beginning of my Reiki journey. Rest assured, that any uncertainties you may have will rapidly disappear as you become more familiar with the wonderful Reiki energy by practising self-healing, receiving empowerments and treating others. Any concerns about these being in your head will disappear and be replaced by an absolute belief and trust in Reiki.

Sadly, Western culture tends to demand scientific proof of everything, not preparing us for experiences that may not quite fit in with our model of the world. Remember that energy is all around us and that we are working with something that has always been there, it’s just that we’ve simply changed our focus.  So, it’s quite okay for you to question in the early stages, ‘Is it me?’ but before long you will be basking in the knowledge that you are out of the equation and, in getting yourself out of the way, you are allowing Reiki to flood through you and beyond.

Enjoy your journey!

Warm wishes

Marilyn Harvey

How to send Distant Healing (Part 1)

reiki distant healing meditations

Lets’ explore Reiki distant healing

What I would like to do in a series of articles is to suggest some different DH approaches. Some may be familiar to you; some may be new.

If you discover a new approach then try it for yourself and see how it feels, and come to your own conclusion about what seems the best way for you, the most comfortable ‘fit’.

Distant healing is a very important part of Reiki practice, of course, and is something that is not unique to Reiki. Distant healing (DH for short) is carried out in different Reiki lineages in different ways and there is no one ‘right’ way to perform this process.

The important thing when carrying out DH is your underlying intent, and the details of the ritual that you use are unimportant.

Simplest distant healing method ever!

What I would like to share with you today is probably just about the simplest version of DH that you can find (I may be wrong here!). It doesn’t involve symbols, it doesn’t involve complex imagery or long affirmations.

It cuts things down to their bare bones, the essence of DH.

How to do distance healing with Reiki

The bare bones of distant healing are to know where you are sending the energy – to set a definite intent – and to allow the energy to flow, so you could try this:

  1. Close your eyes and take a few long deep breaths
  2. Focus your attention on your Tanden point
  3. Say to yourself that “this is to be a distant healing for the highest good of ….[the person’s name]”
  4. Focus your attention on the recipient in your mind’s eye/imagination
  5. Feel yourself merging with the recipient, becoming one with them
  6. Allow the energy to flow from you to them for as long as feels appropriate
  7. When you are ready to bring things to a close, feel your attention withdrawing from the recipient by way of ‘disconnecting’ from them, take a few long deep breaths again, and bring yourself back

In this example we dedicated the distant healing to the recipient’s highest good, which means that we were neutral in the process, not directing the energy to achieve a particular result.

We approach distant healing in the same way that we approach treating another person: we have no expectations, we stand aside and we allow the energy to do whatever is appropriate for that person. The energy is drawn through us according to the recipient’s need without any interference from us; we have no thought or desire about the outcome

Over to you

If this approach is new to you, why not try it and see how you get on, and let us know by posting a message below.

Seeing the same stuff

When you’re fully merged with somebody’s energies in a Reiki treatment, it sometimes happens that you ‘see’ the same things as the person you’re treating. I once carried out a treatment on a friend who I had just attuned to Reiki for the first time. As it wasn’t a formal course (she was one of my first students, in the days before I began teaching for Reiki Evolution), we went with the flow and did a simple treatment swap. During the treatment I saw a huge red crystal, the size of a football. It was a vibrant scarlet and you could see right into it, with pentagon shaped facets that you could peer through (and look, I’ve found a very lifelike image of one for you to enjoy too!). After the treatment, with not a word passing my lips, my friend described how she had seen a huge scarlet crystal exactly the same as I had seen. Naturally we pondered on the meaning of the scarlet crystal and concluded it was to do with the energy of the root chakra, which was somewhat out of balance for her at the time.

I’ve heard of quite a few students over the years who have had similar experiences, and certainly at Reiki shares, when a few people are treating the same person together, it never ceases to intrigue me how often people pick up the same ‘visual’ information from treating the same person. And sometimes the recipient will see the same too. It always seems to cause awe and wonder – no bad thing in my book.

Anyway… make sure you find time to have that chat with your client after the treatment has finished – share what you’ve both experienced and you might be surprised as how much more has been shared that the Reiki energy that has passed through you and into them!

And please feel free to post any similar ‘Reiki Visual’ stories below if you’d like to share them… hopefully then everyone will see, IT’S NOT JUST ME – it’s really quite common when working with Reiki!
